[lstac] Database content challenges

Hi Heather:

In our state, not really a challenge but a legislative bill was introduced last legislative session (Nebraska has a unicameral, or single house state legislature) aimed at statewide databases. The bill didn't pass, but we expect it to be introduced again, as well as something similar aiming at our statewide OverDrive consortium of eBooks and Audiobooks. I'll post the links to the bill and summary below. In response to this, our SLAA revised collection development and challenge policies for electronic resources, and on the database side, worked with the vendor (Ebsco) to create access pages for age categories (e.g. elementary/middle school, and high school), in addition to those available to the GP. All Nebraska schools filter in accordance with CIPA.

Bill summary: http://update.legislature.ne.gov/?p=31513

To my knowledge, there have been no other challenges to any statewide e-resources. I think our technology and access department is working on the policies. Let me know if you'd like me to reach out to them for the policy drafts.

Subject: [lstac] Database content challenges

Hello Everyone,

Seeing the thread regarding statewide resources funding prompted a thought regarding challenges to the content of those resources. West Virginia has not had a content challenge yet, but I would like to prepare. Just in case. Has anyone had the content of the statewide resources challenged? How did you handle it?

Thanks for the insight!
Heather
