Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, and Sexual Assault: Strategies to Strengthen Community Collaboration to Respond to Survivors' Needs
The prevalence of human trafficking across the country is widespread-spanning small, rural jurisdictions to sprawling cities-and affects both domestic and foreign-born children and adults. Because of the coercive and violent nature of human trafficking, it is common for victims to experience overlapping forms of victimization, particularly domestic violence and sexual assault. Yet, many survivors are unrecognized, criminalized, or do not receive adequate services to address their complex needs. How can multidisciplinary groups work together to identify survivors and direct them to services? How can key stakeholders enhance their capacity and collaboration to meet survivors' needs?
This five-part webinar series offers strategies, practical tips, case studies, and resources to help domestic violence and sexual assault service providers improve outcomes for human trafficking survivors. Each webinar highlights models for potential replication and features local and national subject matter experts.
Learning Objectives:
* Understand the overlap between human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual assault;
* Identify effective collaboration strategies that leverage culturally specific resources on behalf of survivors;
* Explore ways to effectively engage the justice system and community stakeholders and sustain involvement;
* Consider examples of partnerships to build agency capacity and enhance victim identification;
* Learn about examples of successful law enforcement collaborations;
* Identify court-based strategies to address the needs of trafficking victims and understand the role and significance of the court and judicial leadership in developing a response to human trafficking; and
* Explore strategies for promoting collaboration while protecting confidentiality.

Update on DOJ CSEC Efforts by Amanda Swanson
Sex trafficking is a hot topic in the news today. It seems that you can't turn on your TV without hearing a story about a victim or pimp. The Oregon DOJ (DOJ) and the federal government have identified that this is an issue worth fighting. In recognition that changes need to be made to upset the business of sex trafficking and to help the victims of this crime, the DOJ created a new position, CSEC (Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children) Intervention Coordinator. DOJ hired Amanda Swanson to fill the position. Prior to coming to the DOJ, Amanda worked directly with victims of sex trafficking for five years. She has been at DOJ for about 3 months. The following is an update of the work she is doing in cooperation with counties around the state.
Since starting in this position, I have been travelling around the state meeting key players in each county to start having conversations not only about what trafficking looks like in each county but also about what services are available and/or needed. Currently I am focusing on 9 counties Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Marion, Deschutes, Umatilla, Jackson, Douglas and Linn. In Clackamas County we are starting to work on a response for when victims are identified and picked up. We anticipate that this response will be rolling out in the next year. In Deschutes County I am working with the CSEC MDT to build and hand out surveys to service providers in the county to get a feel for the size of the issue there and what the issue looks like. I am also working to identify further training and awareness needs of that community. In Douglas County I have started meeting key players for their CSEC MDT and we hope to have our first CSEC MDT meeting scheduled in the next few months.
Along with building CSEC MDTs I am also putting together a technical assistance training team to travel the state and help direct service providers with concrete intense training on how to identify victims, prosecute these tough cases, and offer advocacy and case management for this population. In May, I partnered with the FBI victims specialist and the AUSA to present CSEC information at the Tribal Summit in Umatilla County. The presentation stressed the importance of a collaborative multidisciplinary approach including culturally specific and appropriate services to meet the needs of this population. It's going to take a village.
If you are interested in developing a response to this issue, interested in having trainings come to your county, or have any questions you can email Amanda at Amanda.swanson at doj.state.or.us<mailto:Amanda.swanson at doj.state.or.us>.

Making Connections for Victims
Connecting victims to holistic legal services is critical to their path of surviving. NCVLI works to secure these connections every day. An example from July demonstrates the power of connections.
The mother of a child-victim of sexual assault in New York contacted us seeking a low or pro bono attorney to help protect her child's rights. Our Resource Team reached out to our National Alliance of Victims' Rights Attorneys & Advocates (NAVRA)<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0012Sp08PpKBYEy4z_a1bNerP7405HsmuxjRrstu-EP-qZIb3gFmj0pmNvCu7QsP_jg8DS7rVpzsuMZ0_A7ZQ4NOwtyu9c4TK-rewQzkm1WmvrFHMehQI993XklI_RajI5-GU61mD4AKyy7RxFwTw9O0U-riIk3-HjP&c=maLfDmD2FvRGuaTi8HiDjYH384Ksgu6tTLDi7L7Y-dupRoQ5pdHHdQ==&ch=APwtFmInGXCRgI93mcXN7BEU5GTnuo-18t9H5UHCa5eSXusM3FL0QQ==> and numerous members responded!
Wonderfully, we can refer or place nearly 50% of the victims who contact us. But this is not enough! We need to do more and we need your help to do it. To become a resource for victims and help make a difference, join NAVRA<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0012Sp08PpKBYEy4z_a1bNerP7405HsmuxjRrstu-EP-qZIb3gFmj0pmJrPxOwMeM59q6te0qwDCqel9tdEp9okVMr0yqKuC_RCFumHFZwfGZ9k1kj2fKwSlfJ27_Nu5SDx5HvXBe_yJ0SphMrkrxvTtpbHQAz9Q8gdb56bGo6Gm4g=&c=maLfDmD2FvRGuaTi8HiDjYH384Ksgu6tTLDi7L7Y-dupRoQ5pdHHdQ==&ch=APwtFmInGXCRgI93mcXN7BEU5GTnuo-18t9H5UHCa5eSXusM3FL0QQ==> today!
