Amber Alerts Will Link to Photos of Missing Children Under FCC Upgrades

On September 29, 2016, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved improvements<https://n1.m.tt/a/uqpwbqpqab-vbvmtbgg.html> to Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), a system that delivers critical warnings and information to wireless phone users. The FCC updates are intended to enhance the information state and local authorities are able to send into communities. The changes include requiring wireless providers to support inclusion of embedded phone numbers and URLs in all WEA alerts, including allowing users to link to pictures and phone numbers in Amber Alert<https://n1.m.tt/a/pengpeneqg-vbvmtbgg.html> urgent child-abduction bulletins. The new FCC rules are planned to be implemented within the next 30 months.

Gateway Resources Support Self-Care and Help Avoid Burnout

Professionals are not immune to stress or trauma. Working with traumatized children and families can lead to secondary traumatic stress, which is also known as vicarious trauma. Secondary traumatic stress can impact staff satisfaction, retention, and service delivery and outcomes.

Child Welfare Information Gateway has a series of resources to help managers, administrators, and supervisors understand and address secondary traumatic stress among their staff:

  * Listen to the new podcast<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/233291/2611200/20789/2/>, "Secondary Traumatic Stress," which features three veteran child welfare professionals who discuss examples and outcomes to help staff and agencies cope with secondary traumatic stress. Listen or download the podcast here<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/233291/2611200/20789/4/>.
  * See our Secondary Trauma<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/233291/2611200/20790/7/> web section to read examples and findings on programs' and States' efforts to mitigate the effects of stress and promote self-care.
  * A recent issue of Children's Bureau Express<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/233291/2611200/20791/13/> recently focused on secondary trauma and professionals' well-being. It presented a series of articles addressing secondary traumatic stress at all levels of an agency (worker/peer, manager/supervisor, and organizational).

For an overall look into providing trauma-informed care, see Information Gateway's Trauma-Informed Practice<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/233291/2611200/19187/31/> web section. It includes information on how to build trauma-informed systems, screening and assessment, and resources for families and caregivers.
