ANNOUNCEMENT
May Is National Foster Care Month
National Foster Care Month is officially here!
It is a time to raise awareness about the hundreds of thousands of children and youth who are in foster care and their needs. It is also a time to recognize and thank the families who open their hearts and homes to these children and the child welfare workers who support them.
This year, we are focusing on the importance of kinship care as a preferred placement option when children and youth cannot safely remain with their parents. Living with relatives or kin reduces the trauma children and youth experience when they are separated from their families and allows them to maintain family connections and cultural traditions. By valuing and supporting kinship caregivers, we can demonstrate our commitment to a family-centered child welfare system.
[A picture containing text, sky, person, outdoor Description automatically generated]Our theme, "Relative and Kin Connections: Keeping Families Strong," highlights the Children's Bureau's focus on strengthening families. As we commit to this initiative, it is important that we help children and youth form and maintain lifelong connections with relatives-and not just as placement options.
Youth should be asked, "What relationships are most important to you?" Authentic engagement is crucial in a system that should be grounded in youth well-being.
The National Foster Care Month website has resources<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjA1MDIuNTcyNzczNzEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5jaGlsZHdlbGZhcmUuZ292L2Zvc3RlcmNhcmVtb250aC9yZXNvdXJjZXMvP3V0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1uZmNtMjImdXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fc291cmNlPWxhdW5jaENCMDUwMjIyIn0.4HlQhxY3PWv5LzCy8KMbhkFU7ZhIYYWS6O5NuqaxmJc/s/996670601/br/130670752070-l> on the importance of helping children preserve their cultural and family bonds, the benefits of kinship care, and daily practices that sustain kinship placements If states prioritized kinship care by redirecting resources toward finding and holistically supporting relatives and kin, less time, effort, and resources would be needed for recruiting new foster homes.
