Spring chinook fishing on Umatilla River closes Tuesday
PENDLETON - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials today
announced emergency closure of the Umatilla River spring chinook season,
effective May 15 at 11:59 p.m.
The harvest goal of 150 fish, previously set for the fishery, is
expected to be reached today. The fishery has been open from the Highway
730 Bridge upstream to the reservation boundary, located upstream from
the Highway 11 Bridge at Pendleton.
District Fish Biologist Tim Bailey said fishery managers rely on
run-size projections to make decisions about the Umatilla spring chinook
fishery. The present run projection for the Umatilla River is 1,500 to
2,000 fish, which equates to a sport harvest of 150-200, based on
management guidelines.
"We are managing the fishery around a conservative run size," said
Bailey. "Should the run outperform the low-end prediction, ODFW will
consider re-opening the upriver fishery at a later date."
