Dear Main Street Partners,

Earlier this week, I alerted our network to a potential threat to USDA
Rural Development funding. Now, another important federal program that
has enriched Main Street communities for decades is in serious jeopardy.
The Transportation Enhancements program is the single largest source of
federal funding for historic preservation. It has provided key funding
for streetscape revitalization projects, historic bridges and depot
rehabilitation, scenic landscape preservation and bicycle and pedestrian
safety improvements. Depending on the state, enhancement funds have
been used extensively for projects in Main Street districts.

And now a damaging amendment to an appropriations bill threatens to
divert 100% of TE’s funding toward bridge repair.
We recognize bridge repair and infrastructure improvements are
important, but sacrificing the TE program is not an effective way to
address a maintenance problem. As less than 2 percent of federal
transportation dollars fund the Transportation Enhancements program, it
would take 80 years to address the backlog of bridge repairs using the
redirected funds.
One of the National Trust’s national partners in this fight, the
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, has created a letter urging the Senate to
reject the amendment and we’re asking for your organization to add its
name to the list of supporters.
To add your organization’s name to the letter, please
visit:http://support.railstotrails.org/Paul_letter.
For any questions, please email Rhonda Sincavage

Please forward to any other parties you think would be interested.
And thank you for fighting for an important resource for historic
preservation and Main Street!

Doug
