[OMS_MANAGERS] Advice needed-Event participation

I agree with Harvey that it should take care of itself.

We encourage anyone (even those outside of our EID boundaries) to
participate. If they want to be a part of the marketing of the event and be
on the website, they can join the Association as a Marketing Partner where
they pay a fraction of what others pay for the full EID.

A couple of thoughts from Bandon's Alive After Five activity which is our
third Friday program. First, we have not limited the program or most of the
rest of our activities to our Old Town Bandon district. We have taken a
broader perspective that the community benefits from our Old Town
activities, but then again Old Town benefits from including the rest of the
community. So we have totally avoided trying to segregate our downtown from
the rest of Bandon's business. In short, we haven't prevented their
participation.

Second, the issue took care of itself for us. Those outside of Old Town that
did participate in our initial Alive After Five events experienced exactly
what you anticipated. People weren't willing to walk that far or drive to
another location. They soon dropped out. But it was their choice and we
wound up not being "the bad guy" and still incidently have their support.

Hi all --

I have a situation here in Sandy that I would love to get some outside
perspectives on. We have a winery that is located about 1/2 a mile outside
of our downtown that just moved in about 6 months ago. Their owner really,
really, really wants to participate in our First Friday program, but really
is not even close to the Main Street district. We can't include her because
a) she's not downtown, and b) even if we said yes, there is no way we could
get people to walk that far, so she would end up being open late with an
empty tasting room.

This business owner, however, simply will not take "no" for an answer. We
were going to suggest that she partner with one of our Main Street
businesses (and we have a chocolate shop downtown that does wine tastings
for First Friday - a natural fit), but she has specifically stated that she
does not want to go to another business; she wants people to come to her
business. Also, since our Main Street program is currently funded by the
City of Sandy (our EID failed, so...), she has started using the "I pay the
same taxes as every other business in town, so I deserve to be part of this
program" argument. The only way I can see this working is if the City
Council changes the boundaries of the Central Commercial District, which as
I'm sure you can imagine isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to explain this to
our winery owner in a better way so that she doesn't end up hating us?
