I don't have specific stats in response to your question. However, there is increased vitality in communities where sidewalk dining is allowed - remember our keynote speaker from the conference said, "people attract people!" A good source for info might be the Responsible Hospitality Institute: http://rhiweb.org/

They have an initiative: The Sociable City: Creating Safe and Vibrant Places to Socialize for Your Nighttime Economy
>From their website, they define the "Sociable City as having a healthy balance of safety and nightlife vibrancy, that supports the social experience of the City's residents and visitors alike." A Sociable City:

Grows city service funds with increased property value
Reduces crime through safety coordination
Revitalizes business districts by driving foot traffic
Enhances quality of life for residents and visitors
Draws a creative class of entrepreneurs
Expands tourism and convention trade
Propels relocation of corporate headquarters
Supports local businesses by capturing event markets
Provides transportation systems to match peak demand

The Responsible Hospitality Institute Provides

* Technical services to assess and plan hospitality zones for the nighttime economy

* A global network of professionals dedicated to improving nightlife safety and vibrancy

* On line and on site seminars with RHI's senior staff sharing decades of best practices

* Webinars showcasing cities, authors and solutions

* Networking Conference and Leadership Summit events

* Practical guides on best practices, news updates and other timely resources

Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] Alcohol allowed with dining on the sidewalks

Good morning!
Continuing the alcohol theme....

Our City ordinances specifically prohibit any alcohol in any open container on any street at any time.....
With our new restaurants, and our wish for sidewalk tables to increase downtown activity, we find this extremely prohibitive.

I'm looking for examples or ordinances that allow drinks with meals, obviously under OLCC regulations as well, outside establishments.

(I'd also love to have them allow events with alcohol in the park, but we'll pick that battle some other time)

Sheri, do you have any statistics to show that drinks in contained areas have/have not caused issues, or even made a downtown safer because of the increase of people presence on the streets?

Thanks all!

Regards,
