[OMS_MANAGERS] Board Contributions

Really good discussion around this issue this morning. When I was on the Restore Oregon board, they had a great on-boarding process. One of the things I was given was a document called a board member "friend-raising and fundraising" plan. The plan had options on ways I, as an individual board member, could support the fundraising efforts of the organization. It included a goal of 100% board contribution participation at a level that was meaningful for the member. I thought it was such a great idea that I adapted it for a main street organization - see attached. Best, Sheri

Sarah Lu and Hav did a much better job of articulating the rationale behind my comments.

There are some watch outs with the "Pay-to-Play" model. As mentioned, sometimes otherwise amazing contributors get left on the sidelines. It also has the potential to create a reputation for the organization as being led exclusively by "social elites". Happy to share an example of that offline if you like.

It can certainly be effective, just recognize the tradeoffs.

Our Board member agreement contains language that they contribute as much as they are comfortable with. It also indicates that their contribution can be in-kind like treats for Halloween or Christmas, food at a community gathering. These are just as important as the organization would have to be spending cash to provide these directly. I agree with Katie that you do not want to lose Board members because they cannot make say a $200 cash contribution when what they provide is worth many times more.

So I will say that in a small nonprofit I worked for previously, the board decided to require that board members make a monetary donation and they ended up losing a board member who could not make that financial contribution but was a very visible volunteer and contributed more volunteer hours than anyone else on the board. Not only that, she was also the one board member that connected the most with visitors and pushed membership the most to those visitors. As an observer, it looked like a huge loss for the organization, more so than the amount they were requiring her to give.

I guess I am saying, consider different forms of contributions that equals the same amount, money, volunteer hours, bringing in memberships, fundraising, etc.

Hi everyone,

We are exploring requiring Board members to make a financial contribution to the organization or raise money for it. To those of you who do this, what amount do you require? Do you have exceptions? Have you encountered any problems with doing this?
