[OMS_MANAGERS] Junior Main Street Programs

Hi all - I just saw a recent post on the National Main Street "The Point" about "junior main streets" as a way to engage high school students in main street efforts. In case you missed it...or in case you aren't a member of NMSC, I am re-posting below. I also dug deep in my files and came up with a few things on starting a junior main street and working with youth...Cheers, Sheri

We have a mature Junior Main Street initiative, it's now entering it's 6th year of existence. However, it looks like we took a very different approach that you are currently. We work with a teacher at the high school who has an AP government class, and she has made their civic engagement projects a part of their curriculum more or less. It didn't start this way though - the key to success with our program (I believe) is that we tap into the students in their setting. I go to the classroom, they get the work done. They pick projects that the entire class can work on together and have until the end of the school year to complete.

^ That is the other thing - THEY pick their project (not without guidance).

Since today's teens are over scheduled and overworked, I found that trying to get them engaged with us on our turf outside of school hours was a losing battle.

We have also added a non-voting student position to our Board of Directors and the first person to hold that position actually moved on to become a voting member. So now we have one high school student in the non-voting seat, and a college sophomore who is going to Princeton as a voting member.
