Hi Jenny,
There is a ton of research out there about the social, environmental, and economic benefits of urban tree canopies. Here are a few resources to get started:

We haven’t initiated this type of program in Downtown Corvallis during my time because there is already a good canopy in many areas, but it will likely be a goal of a potential Downtown URA district to improve upon. It’s one of the classic placemaking efforts of new urbanism but communities should be careful about the types of trees planted to limit damage to sidewalk areas.
Thanks,
Christopher

Hello OMS Network!
The City of Yamhill’s Economic Development Committee is developing a plan for a program to plant trees in the sidewalk along our main street and is preparing a presentation to review at an upcoming city council meeting to enlist support from the council and community. I am seeking input from other towns that have initiated programs to plant sidewalk trees and examples of how to communicate the benefits this can have for the downtown district.
Thank you for any insights you may have to share!
