[or-roots] Winter of 1949/50

Hi Cousin Babe and everyone,
I was born in December of 1942. My grandfather died in January of 1947 so I would have
been four years old. I don't remember anything about 49/50 either but I have vague
recollections of my father going to California (Merced) to see his father or for his
funeral. We had what we called a buzz saw with a Model A engine that we used for cutting
wood. I remember looking out the window and our neighbors were over cutting wood for my
mother with the buzz saw and it seemed like there was a lot of snow then. I was using
that same buzz saw myself in 1964 after my father had a stroke and I was on the farm by
myself. Sometime I guess I forgot to drain the water out of it and the engine froze.
Otherwise we probably would still be using it.

I remember the Oregon City shopping center being flooded. We had to use the old Oregon
City bridge to go to Gladstone. Not sure where we came out at to go back south. My
sister and family were staying in a motel. Their house was right by Kelly Field where the
Oregon Trail center is now and their basement and first floor were completely flooded.
Not sure what year that was, either '63 or '64 I believe. We had a lot of snow but when
it melted the ground was still frozen and the rains came but did not soak into the ground.
The fruit stand across from Tony's Fish Market has the high water marks on their walls.
Flooded several times.

We seem to very rarely have snow anymore.

: I was born in Portland in 1945 at the Immanual Hospital so I don't have
: memories of the storm of "49/50". But I vaguely remember a snow storm in
: December 1953, my family (Pickler) lived at Bonnieslope. We wanted to go to
: town and see a movie (I think it was "Snow White".) We couldn't drive into
: Portland because it was so slick so we went back home. I think my dad had a
: "49" Ford.
