Since this looks a lot like something I posted on Facebook this morning I thought I should post yet another follow up on what the results of my search were. It turns out Tom had turned his back on his family. I won't go into details, but it is a very sad story. 

Ironically it never occurred to me in all the years I collaborated with him on researching my great grandfather's genealogy to ask him about his family. He sort of seemed to consider himself part of ours and we have always been a family that was perfectly willing to adopt people that way, no questions asked.
I had a nice long chat a while back with a good friend of his who was a but hurt that Tom cut off contact with him too.  He always thought Tom would get in touch some day.
And if I already posted all this, I refer you to my comment on face book this morning.
