Important messaging for families:
TANF clothing allowance letter sent in error
As you may know, the TANF program clothing allowance helps families purchase seasonally appropriate clothing for their children. The clothing allowance program began in September 2022, with an ongoing cycle of payments released in August, November and May.
ODHS mistakenly notified 19,896 TANF families that they would receive a clothing allowance payment in June. These families had already received their notice and clothing allowance in May.
This was a notice error only. No additional payments were made to families who received an incorrect notice.
We know this error may have caused harm for families who were led to believe they would receive additional funds. Families likely made decisions about their finances based on the mistaken letter that could cause them financial hardship. The department is developing trauma informed direct communication for families.
