Communications Manager
Washington Dental Service Foundation, Seattle, WA
WDS Foundation works to create lasting change in systems in order to improve
oral health for people in Washington. Oral health is a critical component
of overall health. Children with tooth decay have difficulty eating,
sleeping, and learning. Oral disease can exacerbate other chronic health
conditions like diabetes. Yet, oral diseases are largely preventable when
oral health is valued, healthy behaviors practiced, and dental care is
accessed.
This position will be responsible for leading key Foundation communications
strategies including developing, executing and evaluating a large-scale
public awareness and behavior change campaign. In addition, this position
will manage Foundation communications activities including managing the
development and publication of a newsletter, writing press releases and
articles, and managing key websites and ensuring cohesiveness in messaging
and style across suite of Foundation websites.
Work as a member of the Foundation’s team of professional staff to create
vision and commitment to action. This position is part planner, part
writer, and part activist, requiring the ability to ask critical questions,
listen well, and execute effective strategies with skill and enthusiasm.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties
may be assigned.
Public Awareness and Behavior Change Campaign
· Develop an understanding of the underlying theories in successful
campaigns that build public awareness, influence health behavior change, and
shift social norms. Be sufficiently knowledgeable about these topics so as
to apply theories and to be able to speak credibly with internal and
external parties.
· Scan the local and national environment to identify potential
models and draw lessons learned for new strategy development and execution
of Public Awareness campaign and be prepared to act quickly to take
advantage of opportunities.
· Be knowledgeable about the public relations firms nationally that
have the expertise and capability to execute public awareness campaigns, the
quality of their work, their successful campaigns, and their reputations for
collaboration. Prepare RFPs, manage the selection and contracting with
firms and consultants and work with them to:
ü Development and execution of an assessment of the public’s current
awareness about oral health and determine effective techniques and messages
to influence their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.
ü Based on results of assessment, manage the development of campaign
messages and creative materials and oversee launch of paid, earned, online
and social media campaign.
ü Develop evaluation plan including metrics which track exposure of
messages, recognition of messages, engagement, and long-term impact.
· Identify and build strong relationships with individuals and
organizations that are critical to the Foundation’s success in building
public awareness about the importance of oral health. Pursue collaboration
opportunities with partner organizations to embed campaign messages in a
variety of communications channels.
Baby Teeth Campaign
· Manage ongoing Baby Teeth Campaign’s paid, earned and social media
activities with aim of promoting “first oral screening by first birthday” in
dental or medical settings to parents with young children, providers, and
community organizations.
· Identify and act on opportunities to broaden impact.
Foundation Communications
· Develop and implement annual communications plan to disseminate
Foundation messages to target audiences including program partners,
grantees, dental community, and Washington Dental Service.
· Work closely with and support Foundation colleagues in advancing
communications related to their initiatives.
· Ensure cohesiveness in messaging and style across suite of
Foundation websites and materials.
· Manage successful relationship with WDS Marketing team to
strengthen and streamline messaging and produce and deliver articles and
other needed communication materials related to the Foundation or oral
health and support their work as needed.
Overall
· Manage projects and contracts, ensuring accountability, staying
within or under budget, and ensuring progress through project life.
· Balance patience and the need to “cut bait” and decide to abandon a
campaign approach and try a different model for influencing change.
· Represent the Foundation in external audiences; prepare and deliver
written reports and oral presentations as needed.
· Develop and manage the initiatives’ Five Year Work Plans and annual
budgets.
· Provide staff support to Foundation Board Committees, individual
Trustees and the Foundation’s CEO.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ability to analyze professional documents, to access and
synthesize research on oral health issues so as to make it useful and
relevant to target audiences.
· Ability to identify factors in the environment or community
context that either help or hinder awareness about health issues and healthy
behaviors by individuals.
· Ability to see what would be required to create a context
supportive of a shift in public norms to value oral health and practice
healthy behaviors.
· Ability to work with individuals and organizations, at the local
and national levels, to build support for public awareness campaign and
communications goals.
· Conduct oneself in external settings in a way that reflects
positively on WDS Foundation as an organization of professional, confident
and sensitive staff.
· Ability to seek direction/approval from management on essential
matters and discern parameters so as to maximize independence and consistent
support from management.
· Basic financial analysis skills: ability to develop and review
budgets to ensure they include activities needed to reach anticipated
outcomes; ability to track expenses and stay within or under budget.
· Ability to see how one’s work intersects with that of other
Foundation activities – manage in a mutually supportive manner. Make
appropriate use of knowledge/ expertise/ connections of other Foundation
Staff.
· Excellent creative judgment and experience leading agencies and/or
consultants in the development, planning, execution, and evaluation of
targeted paid, earned and social media (using tv, radio, print and online
outlets).
· Experience and success with developing and implementing
communications plans. Must be able to present logical rationale for plans
and to gain approval prior to execution.
· Great interpersonal skills; able to effectively partner with
Foundation colleagues, community organizations, and other departments/teams.
· Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
· Strong analytical skills.
· Ability to manage multiple projects and balance the need for
planning and relationship building with the need for results.
· Flexible: able to adapt to evolving needs of organization, and
able to manage competing projects simultaneously.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor's degree from four-year College or University, and five
years of progressively responsible experience is required. An advanced
degree, particularly in communications or public relations/affairs, is
desirable.
· Demonstrated project management experience required. Campaign and
agency experience is desired.
· Experience in health care or public health environment is a plus.
