Special Collections Associate (part-time, limited appointment)

Lewis & Clark College seeks a team-oriented Special Collections associate
to help in the Aubrey R. Watzek Special Collections and Archives. Reporting
to and working closely with the head of Special Collections and Archives,
the Special Collections associate is responsible for: developing public
services in support of the use of special collections materials, including
reference and research assistance and classroom instruction; working
closely with faculty to promote the use of departmental holdings in the
curriculum; collaborating with reference librarians, the digital
initiatives team and other key library staff to promote the use of special
collections in teaching and learning; creating exhibits and presenting
workshops highlighting special collections materials; overseeing the use of
materials by researchers and scholars in the reading room, and responding
to inquiries from long-distance researchers. Additionally, the Special
Collections associate will work with the digitization of selected
materials, and in cataloguing and processing of special collections
materials in all formats, and helps to supervise departmental student
assistants.



*Duties*



1. Accession, arrange, describe, and otherwise process collections, as
assigned by the Head of Archives and Special Collections and/or the
Archives Coordinator according to local and professional standards.



2. Coordinate and assist in collection-specific activities and functions



3. Serve as a support person for answering Archives and Special Collections

reference requests. Research, plan, and execute exhibits and assist in
other reference efforts. Responsible for reference and research patron
assistance within William Stafford Archives and other archival and special
collections. Consult with faculty, students, and other researchers
regarding their needs as they pertain to Archives and Special Collections
materials.



4. Assist in the paging, use, copying (where appropriate), and secure
storage of unrestricted materials in accordance with the procedures and
policies.



 5. Arrange and describe collections in all formats. Use the Archivists
Toolkit to create EAD collection guides, MARC records, and other finding
aids.



6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Special Collections and
College Archivist.

*QUALIFICATIONS *

MLS. MLIS, or equivalent advanced degree and experience.
Desired: Training and experience with archival practice and emerging
digital formats and standards including archival database applications,
web-based technologies, digitization technologies and standards, and
metadata standards related to the storage, search, and discovery of digital
objects.. Ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing
with library staff, the college community, and other Library users, ability
to work as a part of a team. Strong patron service orientation. Excellent
written/oral communication and interpersonal skills. Physical ability to
lift heavy boxes and exhibit props.
