State Librarian Returns from Fujian, China

[MKD]<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/FullSizeImages/MKFujian.png>State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen has returned from her trip to China. Highlights of her trip included taking a high-speed train (125 mph) from Nanjing to Fuzhou, exploring a historic village featuring tulous (earthen buildings), and visiting both the Fujian Provincial Library and the Fujian Children's Library. She also drank plenty of delicious tea while trying to survive the tropical weather. Dahlgreen gave a presentation at the Fujian Annual Library Conference, entitled "Oregon Libraries: Now and in the Future." She felt honored to be traveling with the 2016 Horner Library Exchange delegation (Richard Sapon-White (OSU Libraries), Veronica Vichit-Vadakan (Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Library), and Jian Wang (PSU Library)), as well as Rosalind Wang (retired librarian) and Amy Lee (Ft. Vancouver Regional Library). Check out the 2016 Horner Exchange blog<https://2016horner.wordpress.com/> for photos and information. (Photo credit: Veronica Vichit-Vadakan)

Resources for Oregon Ballot Measures

As the November 8th Election Day approaches, Oregon State Library reference staff are often asked about measures and initiatives, both past and present. For instance, did you know that 2016 Measure 97, raising corporate taxes, is the most expensive ballot measure in state history, with campaigns, pro & con, raising well over $30 million dollars? This tops the amount raised for Measure 92 (2014) regarding the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food which was defeated by just over 800 votes.

[Ballotpedia Logo]For more information about ballot measures we often turn to Ballotpedia<https://ballotpedia.org/Main_Page>, produced by nonpartisan and nonprofit organization and billing itself as "The Encyclopedia of American Politics." Entries are entirely written by their editorial staff and serve as an excellent source to research measures both in Oregon and nationwide. For example, the entry<https://ballotpedia.org/Oregon_Business_Tax_Increase,_Measure_97_(2016)> for Measure 97 is extremely comprehensive and even contains links to the various campaign ads that aired on television.

For access to primary source material, we would like to also mention our Oregon Voters' Pamphlet Project<http://library.state.or.us/databases/subjects/Voters_Pamphlet.php>. You'll find a complete run of "special election" pamphlets dating from 1913 to present, along with a growing collection of primary and general elections pamphlets. You can also search within the scanned pamphlets.

Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee Meeting in November

The Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee (SDLAC) will be meeting at the State Library on November 9, 2016. The SDLAC<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx#Advisory_Committee_&_Meeting_Minutes> advises the LSTA Advisory Council and Oregon State Library staff on the resources provided by the Statewide Database Licensing Program and includes representatives from each type of library that participates in the program.

At this meeting, the committee will discuss the scope of resources in the program in anticipation of the next procurement cycle, which will take place in 2017-2018. A detailed agenda<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/minutes/SDLAC_agenda_11-9-2016.docx> for the meeting is available. OSLIS Citation Maker Updated to MLA 8th Edition

[MLA]In April, the Modern Language Association came out with the 8th edition of the MLA Handbook. Their philosophy for citing sources is now based on using critical thinking and some flexibility to apply a core template to any source. Also, the concept of containers is important to understand. OSLIS' Citation Maker is used around the country by K-12 and community college students and others. The secondary version<http://secondary.oslis.org/cite-sources/mla-secondary-citation> of MLA Citation Maker was updated to the 8th edition guidelines in late September, and the elementary version<http://elementary.oslis.org/cite-sources/mla-elementary-citation> is expected to be available by mid-November. To learn more about MLA 8, check out the MLA Style Center<https://style.mla.org/> and the Lib Guide created by the HACC Library<http://libguides.hacc.edu/citingsources/mla8>. Questions? Contact Jennifer Maurer<mailto:jennifer.maurer at state.or.us?subject=MLA%208>, School Library Consultant at the State Library.
