Hi all,
Following up on questions from a recent TPEP T.A. call on tobacco use during pregnancy, see below and attached for information from Anna Stiefvater, Perinatal Nurse Consultant in the Maternal and Child Health Section.

The list of resources (attached) may be helpful in dispelling the myth that quitting smoking during pregnancy is stressful for the baby or will "shock" the baby.

The key messages are:
1) Due to the substantial risks to both mother and fetus, pregnant women should be advised to quit smoking and offered assistance.
2) Evidence of nicotine withdrawal symptoms in newborns is scant and contradictory.
3) The safety and efficacy of nicotine replacement products or other pharmaceuticals for smoking cessation aids during pregnancy has not been well established.  Pharmacotherapy may be considered when the potential benefits of quitting outweigh the risks of medication and effects of potential continued smoking.

Please share with the TPEP group as you see appropriate.
