Dear STD Program Partners,
Please see the attached CDC Health Advisory regarding Monkeypox Virus Infection in the United States and Other Non-Endemic Countries issued on May 20, 2022.
Why is this Health Advisory important for STD Programs?
1. Monkeypox transmission occurs through close contact, including skin-to-skin contact; contact with lesions in the mouth, on the genitals, or around the anus; or via respiratory droplets. Monkeypox may also be spread through sharing a bed or clothing. Therefore, both close social and sexual contact may result in the spread of monkeypox.
2. The initial rash of monkeypox may appear in the mouth, on the genitals, or around the anus and mimic the distribution and appearance of rashes associated with herpes, chickenpox, chancroid, or secondary syphilis.
3. In the setting of a rash with this distribution, people with monkeypox may present to HIV and STD clinics and/or outreach testing programs.
4. Globally, some (not all) cases have been identified among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) who report meeting sexual partners on apps and at bars and clubs in the context of larger social events, like Pride festivals.
5. Health officials have identified cases in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the UK, Denmark, Israel, France, Switzerland, and Australia.
6. In the US, 5 cases have been identified, one in MA, 1 in NYC, 2 in Utah, and 1 in Florida. All have reported international travel.
7. Therefore, think monkeypox if you are seeing a patient or client with rash (https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/clinicians/clinical-recognition.html<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fpoxvirus%2Fmonkeypox%2Fclinicians%2Fclinical-recognition.html&data=05%7C01%7CSHELLEY.M.PEARSON%40dhsoha.state.or.us%7C936c7c18323546f1f4d308da3d9df6ca%7C658e63e88d39499c8f4813adc9452f4c%7C0%7C0%7C637890046040531261%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=w%2BXrI4mxpP8U1CXDbfnbhsRNbdLbfdaFcVegSusTbbs%3D&reserved=0>) who has traveled to a country with recently confirmed cases of monkeypox or who has had contact with someone who has.
8. Infectious diseases do not discriminate. Anyone of any sexual orientation may be affected by monkeypox.
9. You have our support. Please reach out the OHA STD Program for questions or concerns. In addition, the OHA epidemiologist-on-call can be reached 24/7 for consultation/reporting/assistance at 971-673-1111.
CDC will have an informational call on Monkeypox today at 11 AM - 12 PM PST (see the link below to participate).
